What is Arraignment? An arraignment is the first step in a criminal proceeding. This is where the defendant is brought in front of the court to hear the charges against them and enter a plea.
An arraignment can be viewed as a pre-trial. Some states will require an arraignment for misdemeanor cases or felony cases. Other states only require an arraignment for felony cases. During an arraignment, in front of a judge the charges will be read to the defendant. The defendant will also be read their rights. (https://herlawyer.com/arraignment-vs-indictment/)
